Friley Hall Dining Center at Iowa State University

The Friley Hall campus dining facility, also referred to as “Windows”, is on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, IA. This project was a complete building renovation set for the summer of 2017 with a firm completion deadline of August 15th and tight timeline in order to be available for the students to use upon their return for the school year.

The building had sat vacant for over 8 years prior to the renovation. The facility now serves between 1100 to 1300 students for lunch and about 800 students for dinner. The project features a substantial dining area with a desert island, beverage counters on both sides, tray conveyor system to the dishroom. Foodservice areas specializing in student choice include a pizza area called “Slice”, a “Savory” section featuring various ethnic cuisine, along with a substantial commercial kitchen area.

Custom fabricated stone top surfaces in the serving areas, water wash hoods, and energy efficient closed loop water-cooled walk-in refrigeration are a few of the special touches that came to fruition in this project. Equipment runs the entire spectrum from griddles & charbroilers, to combi ovens & brick pizza ovens, with everything in between. Multiple walk-in coolers and several reach-in and undercounter/prep refrigerators and freezers. There is also a sliding rack dry goods storage area and enormous dishroom.

Dining room design incorporates an industrial feel with an open ceiling with wood column accents along with colorful decorative campus hall artwork.
