Designing a commercial foodservice space, involves more than just simple layout and equipment selection. It requires a well-thought-out process to ensure safety, functionality, and efficiency. Understanding the phases of design and key considerations during the process can make all the difference in creating a successful space that meets your needs for the long haul.
Phases of the Design Process
When undertaking a foodservice design project, there are key stages that help guide the project from concept to completion:
1. Schematic Design / Preliminary Design Layout
In this initial phase, our solutions engineers work to define the overall vision for your space. This includes determining the layout, general flow of operations, and space allocation for different functions like cooking, storage, prep, and serving. It’s the time to establish the general look and feel of the space while considering future needs and functionality.
2. Design Development
After the schematic design is approved, the design development phase takes it a step further. Here, the design is refined, and more detailed plans are created by our design team. For foodservice spaces, this phase includes specifying kitchen equipment, storage solutions, and selecting the best equipment for durability and safety.
3. Contract Documents
At this stage, the design becomes formalized in detailed construction documents that outline all the specifications, dimensions, and requirements for contractors to follow. This includes plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and any special conditions plans. The focus is on accuracy and ensuring the design can be built according to plan.
4. Bidding (if applicable)
Once the contract documents are complete, the project moves to the bidding phase. This is where contractors submit proposals for completing the work based on the design plans. Selecting the right contractor is crucial for ensuring that the project stays within budget, is completed on time, and meets the standards of quality and safety set out in the earlier phases.
5. Contract Administration
During the contract administration phase, our project management team oversees the project’s construction to ensure everything is built according to the approved plans. The team will review the work regularly, address any issues that arise, and ensure that quality standards are met.
