Tips on Preparing Your Nor-Lake Equipment for an Extended Shutdown

If you’ve had to make the difficult decision to turn off your Nor-Lake refrigeration equipment while the nation handles the fallout from COVID-19, we know you have a lot on your plate.

We want to help take one worry off your chest – the following tips should help ensure that, when you are able to do so, restarting your refrigeration system after an extended shutdown is problem-free.

These tips come directly from Nor-Lake, so you can rest assured they incorporate best practices for your equipment.

Protect Your Cabinets During an Extended Shutdown

  • Turn the power off.
  • Unplug the unit.
  • Thoroughly clean/sanitize the interior and exterior.
  • Prop the door open to prevent condensation from forming and causing mold and mildew buildup.
  • Before starting the unit back up, clean the interior, close the door, plug the unit in, and turn the power back on.

Walk-Ins With Capsule Pak Refrigeration Systems

  • Shut the system off using the power switch or breaker.
  • Clear all product from the walk-in.
  • Thoroughly clean the interior.
  • Shut off power for the light circuit. This will prevent damage to the door gasket and/or door frame heater because it also turns off the power for the door frame heater.
  • Prop the door open to prevent condensation from forming and causing mold and mildew buildup.

Walk-Ins With Remote Refrigeration Systems

If you have remote systems with outdoor condensing units, each system will have one breaker for the walk-in and two breakers for the refrigeration system.

  • Shut off the power to the evaporator section breaker. Wait five minutes for the outdoor condensing unit to pump down and turn off. Normally, this should only take two to three minutes.
  • Turn off the breaker to the condensing unit.
  • Clear all product from the walk-in.
  • Thoroughly clean the interior.
  • Shut off power for the light circuit. This will prevent damage to the door gasket and/or door frame heater because it also turns the power off for the door frame heater.
  • Prop the door open to prevent condensation from forming and causing mold and mildew buildup.

Restarting the Systems

If outdoor temperatures are below 60°F when you are ready to turn your system back on, turn on the condensing unit only for a period of 24 hours. After that, you can turn on the power to the evaporator section and the light circuit.
