Understanding the EPA’s AIM Act: Impact on the Foodservice Industry

ISU Friley Hall Walk-In Cooler

The landscape of refrigeration systems in the foodservice industry is undergoing significant regulatory changes, particularly with the implementation of new EPA regulations under the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act. Effective January 1, 2025, these regulations aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by transitioning to lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants.

Transitioning Refrigerants

Under the AIM Act, several refrigeration systems are mandated to transition from R-448A or R-449A refrigerants to newer A2L alternatives like R-454A, R-454C, and R-455A. These A2L refrigerants are chosen for their reduced flammability compared to previous options, addressing safety concerns prevalent with previous transitions such as R-290 (propane-based).

Safety and Precautions

A2L refrigerants, composed primarily of hydrofluoroolefin, have significantly lower flammability classifications. They require higher energy exposure, such as direct flame or high-energy sources, for ignition, compared to the more sensitive R-290, which can ignite due to static electricity.

Manufacturers are mandated to implement additional safety measures in compliance with EPA guidelines. These include:

  • Sensors to detect leaks within compartments.
  • Automated ventilation or circulation systems.
  • Isolation or safety shut-off valves to minimize potential refrigerant releases.
  • Electronic controls with A2L-specific logic for managing leaks, including system shutdown protocols.

Future Outlook

For readers beyond 2025, it’s important to note ongoing developments and clarifications from the EPA regarding implementation and compliance. Manufacturers will continue to communicate their plans to representatives and dealers, ensuring a seamless transition to the new regulatory framework.
